I was sitting at my desk this week when I received a text from my daughter:

Compliments from teenagers are sometimes sandwiched between extraneous noise. Whatever. I’ll take it. 🙂

I went back to work, and a few hours later my phone rang. It was the maternity ward from a local medical center, they had a mother who’d lost her baby. Would I be available to do a NILMDTS photo session?

I don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. This article will succinctly describe the value of this service and why photographers volunteer their time and resources to support their mission. Watch the video. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, it’s sad. Yes, it hits close to home.

Yes, it means something to somebody.

One of the things I try to impart on my university students is the importance of giving back to the communities where we live. Support your community, I tell them. Volunteer. Stand up for what’s right, and for those who don’t have a voice. Whether it’s a food drive for the hungry, supplies for a shelter, physical labor to help construct a home or professional time and talents in a specialized field, volunteers can truly make a profound and positive different in the lives of others. In this case, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is a small yet tangible comfort a photographer can make to a (fellow) mother who finds herself reeling from a painful loss.

Find your talent. Make it about others, not about you. Look for non-profit organizations in need. Volunteer.

  • JONIECE - My poor heart bleeds for these families who’s lost such a precious gift, and I commend and applaud you for being such a selfless individual. I wish I could help physically, but I know that as soon as I’m able, I’m making a small donation to this foundation! My mom lost a set of twins in utero prior to creating me, while my best friend lost her son at 3 months, so I can only imagine what its like to lose the one thing you love more than life itself!ReplyCancel
