Jay’s Defensive Line
Graduating from Brother Martin High School as class president, state heavyweight wrestling champ and with a football scholarship to Tulane, Jay Rink has always been considered bigger, faster, stronger by his peers. A father figure to eight kids, Jay is an awe-inspiring example of a loving parent; he’s a leader in his Medtronic community; and his family will attest to his compassion as a son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, teammate and friend.
In June 2010, Jay was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that effects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. These “bad” cells stop the brain from controlling the muscle’s movement. The patient is essentially left paralyzed within five years.
Jay is determined to fight ALS. His family, friends and Medtronic co-workers have teamed up to join the fight as Jay’s Defensive Line. Supporting ALS patients is extremely costly; physical therapy and staff support can easily exceed $15,000 per month. In the fall of 2010, Medtronic employees raised more than $10,000 for the national ALS Awareness on Jay’s behalf. In April 2011, Jay’s Defensive Line raised $108,000 to support Jay in his fight against ALS.
Whether you want to sponsor at the MVP level ($1,000), Captain ($500), Touchdown ($100) or just want to be on the team ($25), our goal is to rally a Defensive Line that is one thousand Team Members strong to help raise ALS awareness and support Jay.
ALL proceeds from Jay’s Defensive Line go directly toward Jay’s medical expenses and his fight against ALS.
