Extreme athletics is a Chapman family sideline. In addition to the academic demands of famed Fairfax County Schools, Luke and Josh maintain a rigorous competitive swimming schedule during the week. This is the third year running (no pun intended; I gave up running cold turkey when I moved to Virginia) that I’ve photographed the family for Christmas; last year, we did the whole family just hours after Dad completed a half marathon. ❗ Mom is a marathon runner, too, which is how she so effortlessly keeps up with these screaming balls of energy.
And then to my surprise, Josh started working the camera! It was great, interesting and different — normally boys are dragged here by their moms and bribed to engage, or at the very least threatened to be polite, but Josh was genuinely involved in his images on top of being engaged and polite. (Luke was polite, don’t get me wrong. But he doesn’t necessarily consider his mom’s friend with a camera the greatest thing since peanut butter. Well, not until he found my rebounder downstairs; I see a rebounder in the Chapman family future.)
Josh is a photographer’s dream. I promised him I would try to find work from a magazine that needs images of all-American athletic second graders and we’d make it happen. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he showes up on my blog again before next Christmas.
Aren’t they handsome?
