The hospital room was lined with people — family, I presumed. Mom was still hooked to an IV, and her 40-week, full-term newborn daughter was in the bassinet next to her, no longer breathing. I was there because one of the nurses on the floor called, asking for a NILMDTS photographer to help this family though one of their worst days.
NILMDTS is a non-profit organization that mobilizes professional photographers to provide the gift of remembrance photography for parents suffering the untimely death of an infant. As one of the affiliate photographers, I believe these images serve as an important step in the family’s healing process by honoring the child’s legacy.
It’s not for every photographer. It’s definitely not for aspiring professionals who wish to add more experience to their portfolio. Rather, it’s a unique way for a seasoned professional to volunteer the gift of his or her time and talents in a way that will touch a family for years to come. The needs are greater than the affiliate photographers can serve. If you are a professional photographer and think this might be right for you, please watch the video below and feel free to contact me with any questions.
If you would like to donate to or promote or support NILMDTS in any other capacity, of course we would certainly appreciate your efforts.
Otherwise, if you have children, simply hug them and tell them you love them. Children are such a precious gift.
