Steve Fleming’s watercolor class

undefined

I enrolled in a watercolor class at The Art League last winter precisely because I know nothing about watercolor.  I have found that studying art in unfamiliar mediums helps me to see the familiar more clearly — that is to say, studying watercolor helps me to solve problems that I come across in, say, photography.  It’s kind of like this: take a favorite picture and turn it upside down.  You’ll see things you didn’t see before.

I chose Steve Fleming based on his portfolio — I figured, wow, if I could paint, I’d want to paint like he paints.

Originally, my intention for this post was to focus on the watercolors and the fun I’ve had learning to paint with them, showing a progression toward better in my paintings as the class went on. One of my first efforts a year ago was based on a photo of two men standing on a cliff, overlooking salty Pacific air in the late afternoon sun. My rendition was painted so poorly that the class interpreted it as a comical cowboy in a desert scene.  !  The cowboy from that painting lives on three semesters later as a metaphor in class for solving problems:

“Values are far more important than the lone cowboy in the desert.” — Steve Fleming, Winter, 2011

I wish I had a more complete written list of the wonderful one-liners from Steve Fleming’s watercolor class to share with you. In hindsight, it might’ve made a Twitter feed to rival Justin Halpern’s.:) But I digress.

At some point, I stopped writing notes in class and instead picked up my best camera — the one that’s with me, and in this case, my iPhone — and I started videotaping Steve Fleming as he presented his class demonstrations.  The videos exploded my learning curve and everything changed.  I began sharing the videos with my classmates, and the positive response got me to thinking larger about a project based on his work. Last week, we started the shooting and hopefully the final project will be posted later this spring.

Enjoy the teaser!

steve fleming - I read this again today, and I really must say yes the painting reminded me of a lonely cowboy but it was a really nice cowboy. But I never realized it was supposed to be overlooking the pacific ocean with mist and weather. I feel like a cad but then again that is sort of my job.
On another front, Christine is the most professional person I ever had the great fortune to work with, she promised me some quality work and delivered in a fashion that I was totally not used to. Plus she took some fabulous photos of me, so email her and get her to work her photo magic for you. Steve Fleming

Coach Lou

Coach Lou is my daughter’s swim coach. He holds an MS in Astrophysics (among other impressive achievements) and is strikingly intelligent and personable.

Last summer, he spent all of 10 minutes showing Lexi some stroke tips that were so simple it almost blew our minds, and the following weekend she smashed her previous best time by 3 seconds! This fall, we enrolled her in his Competition Swim Clinic where he works the kids in intensive competition swim training one hour a week. In the five weeks that they focused on backstroke this fall, Lexi improved her overall time by 13 percent, the equivalent of 6 and a half yards in the pool! The stats from Coach Lou’s clinics speak for themselves.

I’m fascinated by people like Coach Lou, people who have a keen understanding of their job, execute the development of an idea flawlessly, operate on a straightforward, efficient philosophy and love their job so much, it’s hard for onlookers to distinguish the fine line that divides their work from fun.

Adrienne

I first met Adrienne when she was just a toddler, way back in the day when my then-boyfriend was in UPT (Undergraduate Pilot Training) with her Daddy. The class graduated and scattered; fast forward 15 years that seemed like 5 and suddenly Adrienne is all grown up! We spend a chilly fall morning at Burke Lake Park catching up and capturing her senior portraits. Adrienne, congratulations on your LaCrosse scholarship, Carlos and I wish you the very best!

Carter [and his pillow]

Carter is my neighbor.  He was in the front yard playing Saturday morning, all packed up with his soft pillow, ready for his parents to road-trip him to the water park.  He saw me walking out my front door with two very cute little kids (not mine; these two were all dressed up and here visiting for pictures; next post!) and he ran back to his house to announce, “Mommy!  Mrs. Christine got two more kids!

Shelley & David | Northern Virginia wedding

David and Shelley celebrated both their first date and their engagement at Vintage Ridge Winery.

“They pair their tastings with food, which altered David’s plan of surprising me with an afternoon picnic,” Shelley says.  ”So we had an evening picnic instead.  David pulled out a massive blue cooler — I thought he must not have a smaller one.  But nope, he packed enough food for a family of 10 because he wasn’t sure what I like to eat!”

Turns out, Shelley enjoys all food as long as it doesn’t involve coconut.  She remembers the yummy cheese stuffed peppers and the two kinds of dessert: pumpkin cake and brownies.  David doesn’t care much for chocolate, so the brownies were definitely packed with Shelley in mind.

The fabulous day, wonderful food and David’s genuine thoughtfulness distracted Shelley from “the most unfortunate haircut.”  David describes it as the worst haircut of his life, right before his first date with the woman he would later marry.  David says he spent the whole date turning his neck with his shoulders, as if strapped into a rigid back brace to keep her from getting a glimpse of the back of his head. :)

On their third date, David and Shelley saw Loretta Lynn — such a legend, they felt obligated to go — at the 930 Club in DC.

“She wore a purple dress that was very … well, she looked like she was dressed for the Lawrence Welk show,” Shelley says.  ”It was a bit surreal and highly theatrical. She forgot the lyrics to ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’ but whenever she stumbled, the crowd supported her with, ‘We love you Loretta!’”

On a beautiful October afternoon in 2009, they revisited Vintage Ridge Winery to celebrate Shelley’s birthday at the location of their first date — and David proposed!

They were married the day before David’s birthday at St. Veronica Catholic Church in Chantilly with a reception following at Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge (and, because it’s worth mentioning, I requested a vegetarian meal and the wait staff presented me with the most amazing plate of pan seared tofu I’ve ever eaten!)

They ordered invitations from Wedding Paper Divas. Shelley loved how modern and clean the original invitation looked, but David thought the graphics looked like exploding germs.  Shelley tried to convince him that they were reminiscent of celebratory fireworks, but he held firm.:) ”Ah, the lovely art of compromise,” Shelley says, smiling. “The invitations we ultimately sent were comprised of two fonts, one known as ‘Gatsby’ … I love this as Fitzgerald is one of my favorite American authors and because I happen to teach The Great Gatsby!”

Rocio Diaz (love the name!) at A Piece of Cake spent time talking with David & Shelley about their tastes, and as they were talking, she was freehand sketching what was to become their wedding cake.

They opted for bright, full, happy hydrangea blooms as their flowers and ended up building their wedding colors around the flowers.

Shelley is certain she qualifies as record holder, as finding a bridal gown took a mere 45 minutes!  The hard part was finding shoes.  She scored a pair of Martina Satin Peep Toes on sale from J. Crew (free shipping, to boot!)

Bob Artman was the DJ for the evening, he planned and orchestrated the timeline of events flawlessly.

David and Shelley have a running joke about Shelley’s inability to follow my simple request that they touch their foreheads together during their engagement session — Shelley kept wanting to rub noses!

Turns out, some of the Eskimo kiss pictures were her favs, and we used them in the guest book album that we created with images from that day.

Many, many thanks to my lovely, talented and awesome second shooter, Laurie Bracewell, who joins me in wishing David and Shelley a lifetime of love and happiness!

July 14, 2010 - 1:30 pm

christine - thank you, Kate! they are such a special couple; as they were cutting the cake, Laurie and I got chills, we were falling in love with them! as we were shooting the one where they were pointing, I overheard Laurie telling them, “You guys are like professional married people!” and that was a brand, spankin’ new iPhone 4; he wanted to hold my camera and take a picture and I told him only if I could hold his iPhone (I wanted to see the camera work backwards) and after about 15 seconds, he snatched it back! Wildly interesting guests. Great couple. Very. Fun. Wedding.

Nick Mangus - Dave & Shelley, Congratulations to you both on your wonderful day. I wish you the best that life has to offer.

May the road rise to meet you and the wind
Be always at your back.
May the sunshine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
May the light of friendship guide your paths
Together
May the laughter of children grace your home
May the joy of living for one another trip a smile
On your lips a twinkle in your eye and when eternity beckons at the end of idle a heaped high with love.
May the good lord embrace you with the arms that have nurtured you the whole length of you joy filled days.
May the gracious God hold you both in the palm of his hands.
And today may the spirit love find a dwelling place in your hearts.

the flying fish

This morning, I photographed a flying fish. Timmy is the dive coach at Walden Glen. Kids at the pool adore Timmy; wherever he is on the pool deck, there’s a crowd of kids of all ages surrounding him, trailing after him, trying to get his attention.

Sometimes, the crowd starts to chant, “Belly-FLOP! Belly-FLOP! Belly-FLOP! …” And when that happens, Timmy fearlessly climbs the board, sails up into the air and comes SMACK down belly-first into the water! He climbs out of the water sporting white welts on his arms, the skin on the front of him good and reddened. It’s one of the coolest, craziest summer traditions around.

August 3, 2010 - 11:03 pm

christine - Timmy, I hope your :final: finals went well! We’ll miss you. Godspeed…

August 4, 2010 - 1:40 pm

Jeff Verges - Nice photos. All that is missing is the audio of the “pop” when he hits the water.

August 24, 2010 - 2:27 am

Karen Sheehy - That is soooo awesome! I used to do the same thing when I was a camp counselor at YMCA Camp. My camp name was “Flipper” after the tv show of course and they used to call it the “Flipper Flop”! The campers were always delighted when I performed the amazing feat. Wish I had a picture like that to show my kids!
