Carter [and his pillow]

Carter is my neighbor.  He was in the front yard playing Saturday morning, all packed up with his soft pillow, ready for his parents to road-trip him to the water park.  He saw me walking out my front door with two very cute little kids (not mine; these two were all dressed up and here visiting for pictures; next post!) and he ran back to his house to announce, “Mommy!  Mrs. Christine got two more kids!

Shelley & David | Northern Virginia wedding

David and Shelley celebrated both their first date and their engagement at Vintage Ridge Winery.

“They pair their tastings with food, which altered David’s plan of surprising me with an afternoon picnic,” Shelley says.  ”So we had an evening picnic instead.  David pulled out a massive blue cooler — I thought he must not have a smaller one.  But nope, he packed enough food for a family of 10 because he wasn’t sure what I like to eat!”

Turns out, Shelley enjoys all food as long as it doesn’t involve coconut.  She remembers the yummy cheese stuffed peppers and the two kinds of dessert: pumpkin cake and brownies.  David doesn’t care much for chocolate, so the brownies were definitely packed with Shelley in mind.

The fabulous day, wonderful food and David’s genuine thoughtfulness distracted Shelley from “the most unfortunate haircut.”  David describes it as the worst haircut of his life, right before his first date with the woman he would later marry.  David says he spent the whole date turning his neck with his shoulders, as if strapped into a rigid back brace to keep her from getting a glimpse of the back of his head. :)

On their third date, David and Shelley saw Loretta Lynn — such a legend, they felt obligated to go — at the 930 Club in DC.

“She wore a purple dress that was very … well, she looked like she was dressed for the Lawrence Welk show,” Shelley says.  ”It was a bit surreal and highly theatrical. She forgot the lyrics to ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’ but whenever she stumbled, the crowd supported her with, ‘We love you Loretta!’”

On a beautiful October afternoon in 2009, they revisited Vintage Ridge Winery to celebrate Shelley’s birthday at the location of their first date — and David proposed!

They were married the day before David’s birthday at St. Veronica Catholic Church in Chantilly with a reception following at Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge (and, because it’s worth mentioning, I requested a vegetarian meal and the wait staff presented me with the most amazing plate of pan seared tofu I’ve ever eaten!)

They ordered invitations from Wedding Paper Divas. Shelley loved how modern and clean the original invitation looked, but David thought the graphics looked like exploding germs.  Shelley tried to convince him that they were reminiscent of celebratory fireworks, but he held firm.:) ”Ah, the lovely art of compromise,” Shelley says, smiling. “The invitations we ultimately sent were comprised of two fonts, one known as ‘Gatsby’ … I love this as Fitzgerald is one of my favorite American authors and because I happen to teach The Great Gatsby!”

Rocio Diaz (love the name!) at A Piece of Cake spent time talking with David & Shelley about their tastes, and as they were talking, she was freehand sketching what was to become their wedding cake.

They opted for bright, full, happy hydrangea blooms as their flowers and ended up building their wedding colors around the flowers.

Shelley is certain she qualifies as record holder, as finding a bridal gown took a mere 45 minutes!  The hard part was finding shoes.  She scored a pair of Martina Satin Peep Toes on sale from J. Crew (free shipping, to boot!)

Bob Artman was the DJ for the evening, he planned and orchestrated the timeline of events flawlessly.

David and Shelley have a running joke about Shelley’s inability to follow my simple request that they touch their foreheads together during their engagement session — Shelley kept wanting to rub noses!

Turns out, some of the Eskimo kiss pictures were her favs, and we used them in the guest book album that we created with images from that day.

Many, many thanks to my lovely, talented and awesome second shooter, Laurie Bracewell, who joins me in wishing David and Shelley a lifetime of love and happiness!

the flying fish

This morning, I photographed a flying fish. Timmy is the dive coach at Walden Glen. Kids at the pool adore Timmy; wherever he is on the pool deck, there’s a crowd of kids of all ages surrounding him, trailing after him, trying to get his attention.

Sometimes, the crowd starts to chant, “Belly-FLOP! Belly-FLOP! Belly-FLOP! …” And when that happens, Timmy fearlessly climbs the board, sails up into the air and comes SMACK down belly-first into the water! He climbs out of the water sporting white welts on his arms, the skin on the front of him good and reddened. It’s one of the coolest, craziest summer traditions around.

happy 4th of July!

birdie

My first spring day on a par-3 course after a L O N G winter, paired up with two men (one of whom is a Real Golfer), and I start my season with this shot:

sorry, wrong number

a license plate on a parked car caught my eye so I put my car in park and jumped out, ran around the front and over to the right and snapped a picture for my friend. horns are honking (among other gestures) and busy people are crazy — they have places to go. I know. so do I.

it was worth traffic distractions to get this shot for my friend — in hindsight, the effort gave us a good laugh, even if the wrong numbers rendered the photo moot (her love is an A-10 pilot.) I can’t keep those A- and F-plane number sequences straight. the Cs are easy, they come with word associations (Nightingale, Tube of Pain, Willing & Able etc.)

if you are a BMW aficionado, live in Northern Virginia and fly an A36, let me know and I’ll get you a print.:)

snowpocalypse (cont.)

my long weekend is now t h e L O N G w e e k!

snowpocalypse

Our long weekend is getting L O N G E R …

It started early Friday morning with the wildly exciting news that school is canceled! We slept late and then just before the flakes started to fall, ventured out for last-minute stops at all the essentials for such a weekend: Gamestop, the library and Starbucks.

Late afternoon found us all sitting in the kitchen, Lexi working on homework, Jonathan on his PSP and me texting Carlos (away this last week on a trip) to let him know that yes, we are fine and have everything we need. WHOOSH quick as a flash, my little sunshine was outside on the patio, barefoot, gleeful to run and play, leap for sheer winter joy in the snow. And then she slipped, fell, stood, and saw the blood everywhere, gushing from her shin. She screamed, “Mommy, my kidney just fell out!” (In hindsight, I’m guessing that was a chunk of tissue?)

Mommy switched into crisis mode, adrenaline taking over, sent off the text mid-letter and followed up with another: “destination: ER. call me.”

Once there, my kids started to argue over who has the most ER visits under his/her belt. :sigh: I know the correct answer: I am considerably more likely to be in the ER with either one kid or the other when Carlos is on a trip. The ER Doc, as fun and wonderful as he was, showed the kids how to suture a wound and assured Lexi that although this was his first attempt ever, it looked as if it was actually going quite well.

Then all joking aside, he said no getting wet — no sledding — for 48 hours.:(

So we sat indoors all day Saturday, sat and looked out the window as inches, and more inches, and then a foot and another of snow continued to fall. The kids played the Wii, DS, PSP — I began to fear that we might lose power and what then of our indoor alphabet world?

This morning, I mustered my nerve and headed outside to dig out our cars — and my wonderful neighbors were already hard at work! We worked long into afternoon getting everybody properly uncovered and recovered from this unusually epic storm that slammed the mid-Atlantic. As we worked, we all got the text that school is canceled Monday, and then more news to expect 6 more inches Tuesday.

So on that happy note: we went SLEDDING!!! (only a few hours shy of 48, Doc.)
