meet our newest photographer!

This morning, when I went to download some photos I had taken with my point-and-shoot, I found some images that weren’t mine — 93 of them, to be exact. It wasn’t hard to guess into whose hands it had fallen, especially thanks to the self portraits toward the end. I’m secretly thrilled by the defocusing, disturbing the frame, rule of thirds, getting right up in there with her lens…

I’m not going to post them all, but chose a pretty representative sampling of her work.

photographing the photographer

When I first queried Carl Zoch Photography for a family session, I let him know straight-up that I’m a photographer. Photographing the photographer can be tricky business, and a simple Google search of my name will bring up my portfolio. I didn’t want him to think this was some kind of feint maneuver.

Carl is stunning at engagement and wedding photos. When my husband and I were engaged, Carl might have been saying to us, “Uh, hey, guys? Over here?” It’s been 12 years and 2 kids since our engagement, so instead of interrupting our kisses to get his shot, Carl had to crash-course us on kissing in public! Walking down the center of a cobblestone street at sunset with our children in tow isn’t an everyday experience — but maybe it should be, at least occasionally.

I chose Carl for a number of reasons:
He’s likable;
He’s a former Oregonian;
He’s mastered Oklahoma sun;
Photographs are important to him.

Sitting on the other side of the lens is an experience I’m still digesting, but I’ve decided this much: photographers should be showing up in the posts of photography blogs, not just in the comment section.

Tonight was our end-of-season party for SYC basketball to celebrate the highlights, which for me was:

Merry Christmas!

I just went from calm and peaceful Thanksgiving weekend to WHOOSH Beginner band concert Drama Club’s “Santa for President” Christmas Nativity play basketball practice homework basketball games Christmas concert in D.C. Spanish test the Nutcracker visits to Toys R Us Christmas photos Christmas photos for clients Christmas cards Christmas cards for clients gingerbread men wrapping presents work holiday party cocktail party dinner with friends lunch…

Oh, and did I mention we bought a townhouse this morning and are MOVING?  :)  (We’re very excited!)

It’s been a blur of a season with closing and contractors and Christmas, and each time I look up to catch my breath as it all goes screaming by, I stop to think about how wonderfully full our lives are! We are so blessed.

Alexis did most of the work getting our Christmas cards out this year: she labeled, stuffed, sealed and stamped “one million thousand eighty” cards. As we came across Uncle Danny’s and Carlos’s grandmother’s card, we stopped for a moment — the memories of those we lost in 2008 remain cherished and will stay in our hearts forever.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas…

the very best gifts

…come from the heart of a child.

This k’nex frame appeared on my desk, showcasing one of my photographs of the architect who designed it:

And this colorful gift was the first to appear under the tree this year.

…this time from Virginia Beach

remember summer?

I spent most of my free time last summer reading Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged.” I took it everywhere I went, told anyone who would listen to read it and photographed it in various stages of my life. We spent a good deal of August at the beach, and I’m just getting around to editing some of those images on this cold, late-fall, East Coast night. It’s making me especially wistful for my days in Tucson. Seems like just yesterday that children climbed trees, scooped up jellies from the water, built sand volcanoes, ate sand and played outside.

These are from Solomons Island with the Ward family over Labor Day…
